The flower with many names

The Strelitzia is a well-known South African plant which can be seen in many designs and prints around the country.

Strelitzia, otherwise known as the bird of paradise flower or crane flower, is a genus of five species of perennial plants and is native to South Africa. It is known as the bird of paradise as it resembles the colours and shape of an exotic bird.

It’s bright orange and purple flowers are large, spiked and hardy and are arranged in a fan-like shape. The plant can reach an average of 1.5 meters in height and 2 meters in diameter. It is one of the most popular plants in South Africa and can be found on our 50 cent coins and along many of our major roads.
